What is an intensive course?

  • An intensive course can be anything you want it to be. Many people decide that, due to financial reasons, they only want one hour-long lesson per week. This is fine, but often you end up needing more lessons because you spend at least 10 minutes every lesson readjusting to the car and remembering everything so you are not getting the full benefit of your one hour.

  • It is because of this that some people like to compress their lessons into a shorter period of time. That way, not only are they learning to drive more quickly, but it is much more time and money effective.

  • The average learner will need 35-40 hours of lessons, if not more so it is important to keep costs as low as possible. By doing an intensive course, you are less likely to need extra lessons, thereby saving yourself money.

Two examples of what you might do are as follows:

  • If, for whatever reason, you want to pass your test in a space of 10 weeks, then you will require 3 or 4 hours of tuition per week. This can be done in one hour slots, but it is often more effective to have two 2-hour lessons.

  • In some cases, people need to learn to drive in a very short space of time, perhaps because they are starting a new job. It is therefore possible to take your driving course over 1 or 2 weeks. This can be a tiring experience, because you could be having up to seven hours of tuition each day, however it is a very effective way of learning as there is no time to forget what you have learnt! To do one of these very intensive courses, we do recommend that you have had at least 5 hours driving experience just so you know the basics. We also recommend that you plan it well in advance, as you will need to have taken your theory test and booked your practical test before you can start it.

To sum up...

  • The advantages of taking an intensive course are:

    • If you need to pass your test by a certain date, you can do so by condensing your lessons.

    • There is less time between lessons, so you are less likely to forget things and you will not need to spend as much time warming up at the start of each lesson.

  • You should first consider:

    • It can be hard work. If you are taking all your lessons in a very short space of time it will be very tiring and you might get fed up of doing the same manoeuvre several times over. However your efforts will pay off.

    • You will have to have passed your theory test and booked your practical test beforehand, so that your lessons can be arranged to lead up nicely to the time of your test.

    • You should have had at least 5 hours of lessons prior to starting your intensive course. That way you will be familiar with the basics and you will be able to move onto the more difficult matters more quickly.
